3 Things That Will Get You Ahead Of 99% Of Photographers

Photography is not just a hobby or profession, it's a medium through which we can express our creativity, share diverse stories, and make a positive impact.

As a visual storyteller, you have the power to inspire, inform, and evoke emotions through your photographs.

But here’s the most asked question…

What makes good photography great?

From my 15-year career as a photo creative, if I had to list the top 3 things that can transform your photography, it’s this:

1. Tell a Compelling Story

Photography is all about telling stories through visuals. It's not just about clicking a button and seeing a flawless image, but about conveying ideas, emotions, and messages.

The story is the heart of your photograph, with the technique serving as a tool for visual storytelling. Composition, lighting, colors, and depth of field are just a few elements to consider when crafting your story.

When your image connects with the audience and evokes emotions, that’s when you know you’ve done it!

2. Master Your Technique

While storytelling is important, mastering your technique is equally crucial.

Photography is a technical art form that requires an understanding of cameras, lighting, and post-processing. Knowing the technical aspects empowers you to effectively translate your creative vision into captivating visual representations.

Composition, exposure, and focus are key aspects to master in photography, as they greatly impact the final result. So experiment with different settings and camera modes to understand how they affect your photos.

3. Creativity

This one’s probably a no-brainer.

Photography is about finding fresh and innovative ways to capture the world around you and creativity involves thinking outside the box and exploring different genres of photography.

To enhance your creative skills, try experimenting with unconventional angles, perspectives, and lighting techniques, explore different editing styles, and post-processing techniques. They will enhance the mood and atmosphere of your images.

Remember, creativity is not just about the final image, but also the process of creating it.

By mastering these essential elements of photography, storytelling, technique, and creativity, you can create images that inspire change, evoke emotions, and challenge the status quo.

Stay bold, keep inspiring, and continue empowering your visual storytelling.
